Will Mikel Arteta face the same issues with Mesut Ozil?

Unai Emery has been sacked and relieved of his duties as Gunners boss after winning just one Premier League game since September. Their home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt saw Arsenal go seven games without a win for the first time since 1992. It sealed the fate of Emery, who was in charge for just 18 months after succeeding legendary manager Arsene Wenger. Although it was clearly foreseeable, many fans were left gutted by his departure.
He left in good spirit and very thankful that he was allowed to manage the talented team. Fast forward to now and a new manager has already been appointed, Mikel Arteta, for three and a half years. A former Arsenal mid-fielder, many are excited and intrigued as to what Arteta will bring to the field.
Arteta revealed in his press conference that it was a dream of his manage Arsenal and working alongside Pep Guardiola at Manchester City has given fans’ optimism that he’s the right man for the job, despite no experience. He has already been given the seal of approval by Aaron Ramsey who claimed on Instagram: “Fantastic appointment by Arsenal. Always knew Mikel would go on to be a top manager. Good luck my friend but I’m sure you won’t need it!”
All seems to be going well for Arteta so far, but recent speculation suggests that the way he handles Mesut Ozil will prove just how well things are. Despite leaving Ozil out for several games at the start of the current campaign, Emery also described the German as a brilliant talent. “I’ve had a lot of conversations with Mesut Ozil. He’s a very important player for the team. There are games in which you see Mesut’s brilliance, linking with the attack”.
Ex-Arsenal legend, Nigel Winterburn, doesn’t deny the German’s brilliance but claims, “he just doesn’t show this consistently”. Emery is also often criticised for the fact that he was desperate to find the winning formula, with Ozil the focal point of his attack. The German also found himself incompatible with two other skilled players, Aubameyang and Lacazette. And there were times were Emery had to leave one of them out in the XI.
It’s perhaps quite interesting that Emery believes Ozil needs other players around him to thrive but that’s not uncommon for a player like the German. And what’s more interesting is how Arteta will deal with such a player. Arteta, who has spent the last three-and-a-half years as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, met the squad on Friday and left them under no illusions as to what he expects.
‘I will be in the stands tomorrow at Everton. I want you to know that I will be watching your attitude, your efforts, your body language. ‘I will see what you do when we lose the ball, what your attitude is. Also, what you do when we have the ball.’
He concluded with a condescending statement claiming any player who is not fully committed or does not conform to his philosophy will have no place in his plans.
